Clay, thread, jute, screen-printed netting, canvas, sand, and steel
Dimensions variable - this installation measured approximately 4 x 11 x 9 feet
“Conjuring a future full of pasts” reflects my research into netting as an early camouflage technology used in WWI. I also reference ghillie suits, garments covered in jute, leaves, and brush, that hunters and snipers use to conceal their positions. The title comes from "Mushroom at the End of the World," a book by Anna Tsing that presents a theory of heterogeneity, precarity, and survival in disturbed environments.
There are 4000 unique, individually-sculpted clay pieces sewn onto the netting and the sandbags are handmade from the same screen-printed netting. The piece weighs about 30 lbs (not counting the sandbags).
